Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea

Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art

Art and Artists of the 20th Century

The Municipal Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art was established by the Municipality of Arezzo in 1962, following the success of the “Premio Arezzo” dedicated to painting. The Gallery began its activities by organizing a series of highly interesting exhibitions. At the same time, it started collecting an original permanent collection of works by Italian artists – primarily Tuscan – both established and emerging.
The collected works were exhibited until the mid-1980s in Palazzo Guillichini, the first home of the Gallery, and were presented in a catalog titled “The Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art of Arezzo,” curated by Enrico Crispolti.
In 1994, the renovation project of the former Albergo Chiavi D’Oro, adjacent to the Basilica of San Francesco and located in the square of the same name, was approved, leading to the inauguration of the new venue at the end of 2003.
Currently, the Gallery hosts large temporary contemporary art exhibitions.
