Casa Petrarca Arezzo

Casa Petrarca

Petrarca’s house

Immerse yourself in the poetry of the Aretine Master, room after room, breathe the air that gave life to the genius of Francesco Petrarca

Within these walls, in the heart of ancient Arezzo, precisely in the Borgo dell’Orto, one of the greatest poets in human history was born: Francesco Petrarca. Today, you can discover the rooms where the genius, who, along with Dante Alighieri and Giovanni Boccaccio, shaped the history of the Italian language and literature, took his first steps. When Petrarca was born in Arezzo on Monday, July 20, 1304, Dante Alighieri was also in the city, having sought refuge there with Francesco’s father, his great friend Ser Petracco, both exiled from Florence.
Casa Petrarca is now a museum and the headquarters of the Petrarca Academy of Letters, Arts, and Sciences in Arezzo, which celebrates the greatness of Petrarca, his works, and the influence of his art over the centuries. Casa Petrarca houses magnificent Renaissance paintings by Tuscan painters, Petrarchan relics and materials, a collection of 250 ancient coins, and a library rich in works and volumes related to Petrarchism, the Italian cultural movement of the 1600s.
Visiting Casa Petrarca is like taking a dive into 14th-century Tuscany. Just step out onto the terrace and conclude your visit by admiring the imposing marble statue dedicated to Petrarca in the Prato, and you will find yourself at the center of a bridge connecting the past and the present.
